OSMOSE

Preamble

OSMOSE is a project that demystifies mental illness among Secondary 4 and 5 students. The project exists as a result of high exposure to risk factors associated with mental illness among teenagers, as well as their interest in the subject.

OSMOSE is a dynamic and interactive presentation during which seven themes can be addressed, namely addictive disorders, learning disorders (ADHD, autism), stress-related disorders (PTSD, adjustment disorder), eating disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders and mood disorders. Since our presentations last between 60 and 75 minutes, we ask teachers to select three of these themes and indicate their choice to us in the registration form. For each topic, the presenters set out clear and simple definitions, explore the causes, distinguish the symptoms, explain the consequences and discuss the treatments available. The presentation then seeks to reduce certain prejudices associated with mental illness by proposing alternative attitudes to adopt when confronted with it. It ends with a review of the main resources that can be useful to students in times of need or to help those close to them. It is important to note that the presenters are university students of medicine or psychology. They are not counselors or psychotherapists: their objective is to impart a certain level of knowledge in mental health and to offer secondary school students a more informed view of mental illness. The presentation finally ends with a review of the main resources that can be useful to students in times of need or to help those close to them. It is important to note that the facilitators are university students of medicine or psychology. They are not counselors or psychotherapists: their goal is to share more information about mental health and offer secondary school students a more informed view of mental illness.

There are no costs associated with this activity. It is in line with the objectives pursued by the public health committee of IFMSA-Quebec (International Federation of Medical Students Associations).

In 2018, the OSMOSE project won 3rd place in the Americas projects competition!
