Here at last
My name is Ghassen and I’m a first-year medical student at McGill University. I am also the LEO for IFMSA-Qc this year and I will be travelling with our delegation to Lima to attend this year’s Regional Meeting of the Americas. The road has been quite long to get here, but the time has finally come to leave for Lima and to get down to business. Months of build up have been leading to this week, and I couldn’t be more pumped to get there.
Although I have never attended an IFMSA General Assembly or Regional Meeting, I have some experience in work as a delegate for Model UN simulations, and I can’t wait to get back into the spirit and grind that make these events so memorable. The week ahead will be very challenging and intellectually demanding, but equally entertaining and rewarding. It is no coincidence that a delegate’s favorite quip is « sleep is for the weak »!
Pour les curieux, le thème de cette rencontre porte sur les enjeux climatiques et leur impact sur la santé. Quel thème quand même! Tant de choses à dire, tant de questions à explorer, tant de conversations à avoir. La question des enjeux climatiques, et de leur impact sur la santé, est un sujet qui me tient particulièrement à cœur et dont j’ai particulièrement hâte de discuter avec les autres délégués. En ma fonction de LEO incoming, je parle beaucoup avec des étudiants étrangers qui viennent faire leur stage à McGill, et il est toujours intéressant d’explorer les différents points de vue et approches qui existent à travers le monde. To be able to do so in the context of a meeting regrouping students from all around America will be awesome.
En là réside tout mon intérêt pour cette rencontre : l’objectif que je me fixe est d’engager la conversation auprès des autres délégués, de comparer nos différentes perceptions des enjeux climatiques, de leur impact sociétal sur la santé des populations, des approches que chacun a explorées, et de travailler à partir de cette base vers une solution commune et, surtout, tangible. Easier said than done! Puis ensuite de mettre le tout dans un format que nous pourrons ramener avec nous et partager avec la communauté des étudiants québecois, la tâche s’àvere ardue. Our team is strong however, and I am sure that we will succeed. At the end of the day, we`re all here because we want to contribute as best we can and to give our all this week. Here’s to an amazing time with this amazing team!
